Workshop Overview:
In today's organizational landscape, women and leaders from the global majority often find themselves navigating unique challenges as they ascend to leadership positions. One of the most pressing challenges is the Glass Cliff Phenomenon—a situation where individuals from these groups are more likely to be placed in leadership roles during times of crisis or downturn, setting them up for a higher risk of failure. This workshop is designed to unpack the complexities of the Glass Cliff and equip participants with the knowledge and tools to foster equitable leadership environments.
Throughout this 2-hour session, participants will explore how stereotypes, biases, and systemic challenges contribute to the Glass Cliff. We will examine the organizational dynamics that perpetuate this phenomenon and identify the critical support systems necessary to ensure that diverse leaders are set up for success, rather than failure.
Participants will engage in both reflective and action-oriented activities, allowing them to assess their own organizations' readiness to support diverse leadership. They will also develop personal strategies to navigate potential Glass Cliff scenarios in their own careers.
Session Objectives:
Examine the Glass Cliff Phenomenon: Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of what the Glass Cliff is, how it manifests in organizational settings, and its impact on leadership trajectories, particularly for women and leaders of the global majority.
Organizational Preparedness: Identify strategies organizations can adopt to prepare for and support incoming leadership from diverse backgrounds, ensuring equitable opportunities and support systems.
Designing Multi-Tier Equitable Systems of Support (MTESS): Participants will learn how to create and implement Multi-Tier Equitable Systems of Support (MTESS) that address both organizational needs and personal leadership development, ensuring sustainable and inclusive leadership practices.
Personal Leadership Reflection and Advocacy: Participants will reflect on personal leadership journeys, identify individual needs, and develop strategies for advocating those needs within organizational structures.
Interactive Elements:
Group Discussions: Facilitated conversations that allow participants to share experiences, insights, and strategies related to the Glass Cliff in their organizational contexts.
MTESS Plan Development: Guided sessions in which participants draft MTESS plans for their organizations and themselves, fostering a proactive approach to supporting diverse leadership.
Personal Leadership Planning: Exercises designed to help participants reflect on their leadership paths, identify personal strengths and challenges, and create actionable plans for self-advocacy and career development.
